Macy's
Passport99: Magic Johnson's Show
©1999
Metrofashion- Earvin
"Magic" Johnson co-hosted the Macy's
Passport99 event in San
Francisco, September 17th. Magic, as the former Los
Angeles Lakers basketball superstar is so fondly thought of by the public,
was wonderful. Boisterous and affable as a hound dog, Magic was the perfect
complement to Sharon
Stone's (co-host) sophisticated uptown demeanor. Macy's
Passport series is part-fashion show, part-cocktail party, and mostly, chic-garbed
mingling. Magic
Johnson was a superb social magnet around which the San Francisco stylish
crowd gathered and cheered.
Magic Johnson As famous for his
coming out about his fight with his personal
HIV positive testing as he is for his circus-level National
Basketball Association career with the Lakers,
Magic
Johnson has become a cultural symbol for Americans to think about the
impact AIDS
is having on our society and the world. After his HIV testing become public,
Magic left, returned, and left again a brilliant basketball career that
made him one of the best known sports
celebrities in the last 30 years. His on-court rivalry with Boston
Celtics legend Larry
Bird propelled professional basketball from being the lesser known of
the professional sports in the United States to a dominant role in corporate
marketing inflluence. Magic always seems to be rolling through life, laughing,
jesting and relating, connecting to those around him and those who watch
him in the media. He is an incredibly comfortable media star, alive when
on camera or stage, be it in competition or in fundraising.
Magic opened the Passport99 show with a call-to-action for the audience
to participate generously and to educate themselves as much as possible
about the AIDS
virus phenomena. Magic made it clear that much progress has been made and
that AIDS
victims are now living longer and more vital lives. As a host MC for the
Macy's
Passport99 charity function, he came across as sincere and inspiring.
Magic's endearing personality reminded the audience that the heart of any
major social extravaganza like Passport99 is the benefits derived by the
recipient charity organizations.
