Ethan Hawke in the
movie Gattaca |
Taking
a Shower in Gattaca
While we may view the daily shower as a
simple escape from the dronezone, Vincent Freeman/Jerome Morrow (Ethan
Hawke) in Gattaca would have a different opinion.
In the movie, his daily shower protects his assumed identity by washing
away the loose skin, hair, and external body fluid traces that might
reveal his DNA composition. The shower element of the movie is critical
to its power - Vincent must wash away any evidence that may expose
him as an "In-Valid" in Gattaca. The exercise of washing away
his true identity everyday is a symbol of Vincent's acceptance of
the dronezone in Gattaca. |
"Gattaca"
is the center for space flight in what seems to be the mid-21st century
on Earth. Having
mapped the human genetic structure, man can prescreen unborns for
genetic tendencies and determine who should qualify for what roles
in the society. Gattaca requires a human to be an "Elite", someone
of pristine genetic structure. Vincent was born of natural birth by
a naive mother, making him an In-Valid and ineligible for society's
most desirable roles, including space travel through Gattaca. But
he will not accept this status, and devotes his life to fooling the
Gattaca establishment and getting to space. He is assisted in this
endeavor by the real Jerome/Eugene Morrow (Jude
Law), an Elite by birth who is now crippled and uses his counterpart's
deceptive earnings to maintain his sumptuous lifestyle. |

TRIBUTE TO ETHAN
HAWKE |
|
Ethan Hawke once said
about Sony, in awe; "...they're so big!" Deftly summing up the
character of the 20th century, a century marked with hugeness in war, wealth,
and wanting, Hawke positioned himself as a new Hollywood icon. Hawke is
one of a group of new Hollywood personalities whose primary motivation is
improving his skills, growing as an actor. We are looking forward to great
things from Ethan Hawke in the future. |
