 In
Renée Bardot's birthplace of Frankfurt, Germany, her destiny
was shaped at an early age as a primary fashion leader. Simply,
she played dress-up with fabric scraps in her father's leather
clothing company. It was in this arena, Renée would create elaborate
gowns and costumes by draping chiffon or other discarded fabric
over her five-year old frame. Renée's father had taken notice
of his design protégé and began to teach her everything there
was to learn about the hand-sewn coats, pants and jackets he
sold and distributed throughout Germany in the late sixties.
As Renée grew older, her innate talent of working with fabrics became ever
more apparent to her father. Thus, he took the pre-teen Renée under his
tutelage, apprenticing the budding designer for the next six years. Renée's
father was a haute couture sewer and he passed the generations-old art of
creating clothing down to his apprentice. She eventually attended a German
university in the study of history, and by the age of twenty, was selling
her designs to fashion forward stores.
Before long, Renée moved to Amsterdam were she honed her business
skills and opened her first store, Jezebel. She then moved back
to Germany and worked as an assistant to the late designer C.
Gordon. Nationally known in Germany, C. Gordon - along with
his peers, Karl Lagerfeld, Wolfgang Joop, Uta Raasch and Iris
von Arnim were part of the burgeoning German cultural Renaissance.
Gordon's mastery of draping and European pattern-making greatly
influenced Renée and her designing skills took on whole new
artistic bent.
Cultural
Education Her next stop was Waikiki, Hawaii. In this tropical
climate, where sun and bare-skin are top priorities, Renée adapted
quickly to warm weather fashions and opened a retail beachwear
store named Donna. Her European aesthetics were tested but she
produced stylish sun-n-turf wear generating a name for her on
Oahu. Renée continued her education with pattern-making classes
in Honolulu, giving her the ability to convert her metric measurements
to American standards. Renée continued to travel the globe --
back to Germany, then to Rio de Janeiro, assimilating new ideas
for fashions and furthering her cultural education.
Eventually, she wound up living in Los Angeles's Koreatown.
After several years of working in and around the City of Angel's
fashion design community, she decided to open the first Renée
Bardot retail store on La Brea Avenue three years ago. Renée
wanted to design contemporary wear for the modern woman, clothes
that would be fun, sexy and hip without sacrificing the wearer's
comfort. Also, she wanted to insure her clothes looked great
in the day and could be worn well into the evening. Furthermore,
Renée's original designs needed to travel well, accommodating
women who loved to travel - much like her.
"Recently, a beautiful mother, with her equally lovely, twenty-something
daughter were in the store. They were buying clothes for a trip.
They are the people who buy my product. Women who are fashionable,
stylish and know about the world," comments Renée. "My clothes
look fresh right out of a suitcase which might have just traveled
across the globe. Personally, I don't want to spend an hour
ironing before I hit the nightlife of Singapore, Berlin or Paris
and I don't think my clients want to either."
Inspired by her father, the designer C. Gordon and her wanderlust,
Renée is now content as a designer in Southern California. She
aspires to creating more retail boutiques bearing her name in
flourishing neighborhoods where her contemporary and feminine
designs will catch the eye of other trendsetters - paralleling
Renée's own lifestyle.
