| Special Story: American
Wealth in the 1990s |
"So
what...?", Repr. Henry Hyde says over and over to the U.S. Senate. "So what...?"
the Dow says to the financial crisis in Japan and Brazil. "We're doing great!"
American stock is hot, the Internet is sweeping the world, and fashion is fur-ry
again. Heck, even the young
people are gettin' some of the glittery action. Astronaut outfits as wedding attire.
The Los Angeles Times says, "casual, civilian space travel is coming soon." What
do you say let's get off of the planet before it all catches up to us! "
Smile!
How to buy Cover-Girl Teeth", "Modern Diamonds", "Flashes of Fur", "The 50 Most
Fashionable Gifts". Times are changing. Just forty short years ago families were
working months to put that new gadget, the television" into the living room. Meanwhile,
American submarines were sharking the world's oceans tracking Russian counterparts
and taking the first steps toward global law enforcement. Those same subs were
testing technologies that led to incredible leaps in America's ability to create
and market goods; cut to the 1990s, where a hill-climbing public stock market
has transformed the country into the wealthiest society in the history of mankind.
And there are no signs of slowing down. The greatest barrier to wealth creation
is ideology; from California to New York to Texas the days of stubborn ideology
are numbered. Citizens want tools and food choices and vehicles, and lots
of them. The thirst for material choices has finally out-stripped collective
identities. Capitalism and democracy in America have created the first "sprint"
society, sprinting onward to ever-more sophisticated lifestyles. What's
the magic? Just say, "So what?"(Cover

1990S PROSPERITY |
1980s
Fashion Models defined the The Face of Prosperity
In the late 1990s, America
is seen as the land of prosperity.
Even with the prospect of economic crisis in Asia,
Russia, and elsewhere, U.S. stock is strong. Shown here on the
cover of Self Magazine from summer 1998 is Elle MacPherson, supermodel, businesswoman
and recent new mom. Elle's face and figure have been synonymous with the prosperous
1990s American. Australian by birth, and American through celebrity, the face
of Elle is the face of prosperity. Even Self proclaims, "Biggest Issue Ever!".
And why not Elle to grace the crowning cover? After all, she's wealthy, mature,
independent, beautiful, and, now, motherly. |
