Macy's
Passport99: Metro Fashion Extravaganza
©1999
metrofashion- Macy's
September 16-19th "Passport99" fashion event in San Francisco was a spectacular
fundraiser for HIV/AIDS
organizations in California,
capping 10+ years of Macy's
support for HIV/AIDS
research and establishing the annual Passport show as a major stop on
the fashion circuit. MetroFashion
Magazine was there, capturing the event with an exclusive photographic
series to be presented here on the Internet. This issue we present the first
segment featuring some of the celebrity
images of Macy's
Passport99.
Sharon Stone Replacing Elizabeth
Taylor as the guest MC of the Macy's
Passport99 was actress
Sharon Stone. It's fair to say that Mrs. Stone had on her "game face"
for the Passport99 event; she was ebullient, charming, and articluate, voicing
the challenge of fighting the tragic AIDS
epidemic which has now taken millions of lives worldwide. Mrs. Stone
shared her personal compassion for AIDS
victims and noted how the disease has touched everyone's private social
communities.
One of the highlights of the Passport99
Fashion Show was the celebrity auction
event, where flamboyant gifts such as a personal ride with Tommy
Hilfiger on his private blimp were put up for bid. During the auction,
Mrs. Stone literally ran around the stage, up into the stands, and down
onto the catwalk seating area, rallying bidders to drive the auction prices
higher and stretch their financial commitment to HIV/AIDS
charity. She would embrace and nudge and hold hands with her audience,
getting everyone into the action, and compressing what seemed like an arena
of 1000s into an intimate evening social affair for a few.
You can't say enough about the impact that Sharon
Stone has had on modern
women's culture, and this was evident in the reverent, sisterly manner
with which she was greeted by the professional female auction winners who
came on stage. At once enthrawled by her presence and charisma, they along
with the rest of the audience were grateful for Mrs. Stone's self-deprecating
manner when she spoke earlier at the podium about "ME (actually) getting
a call from Elizabeth Taylor, THE Elizabeth Taylor." Even celebrities are
celebrity worshipers, but Mrs. Stone kept the Passport99 crowd focused on
the matter at hand, and Passport99 came off as intensely entertaining as
well as philanthropically fruitful.
