2000 - Wild and Modern |
After
pretty, the next trend for Spring 2000 is wild.
We call these pieces "prototypes" because they look great on the catwalk,
but may never see the light of a store display, or make it through more
than one season.
It's fitting that Spring 2000 should have include such a variety of experimentation;
after all, our culture is infatuated with new ideas and start-up concepts
here at the beginning of the new century.
Vivienne
Tam
presents a plastic-textured shoulderless dress that evokes comic book superhero
chic. Where's the cape? The look is stretched and very modern, and the casual
observer can't tell whether the walking model is motivated or just uncomfortable.
In
this view, Versus
present cut-off tops and short-shorts (see image below) that look authentic
- did they take the scissors to these designs backstage? And staying with
the Spring
pattern theme, shapes and forms appear in the chest and run down the
shorts.
Throughout the patterns persist. In Tam's design, a web-like illustration
spreads across the chest and abdomen like an architectural tattoo. In a
suede topless piece from Chloe,
the pattern is an embroidered 70s-style
