Metrofashion Fall 2000 - Mod Squad Glamour

Chloe, Armani, and Prada are among the international fashion designers that resurrected 20th century city chic for the spectacular Fall 2000 season. New York, London, Paris, and Milan catwalks glowed golden in February with denim, camel leathers, and opulent details, and the looks have reached the city shopping districts here in September. So "let's us" have a look! (runway photographs ©Joseph Cartright, cartright.com)

"Mod Squad" is the inspiration for Fall 2000 fashion..., cool city chic, retro designs, and luxurious details define Fall 2000 and the return of glamour. The mood of a movie sometimes determines its legacy. So goes it with Mod Squad, the hip 1999 cinema takeoff on the late 1960s-early 1970s television series.

Mod Squad movie video Claire Daines rebel youth cop movies fashion leather citylifeThe movie is dark, whimsical, and brash, framing the awkward world of the the late 1990s American youth, a world full of wealth and glamour, but devoid of purpose or dignity. Trapped in this world with no spiritual center are three young handsome rebels, each with attitude and personality, led by 90s cult heroine Claire Daines. Their stylish dress and haughty attitude sets them apart from the homegenous youth culture of the day.

Fitting then that Mod Squad's legacy (18 months later) would be a Fall 2000 fashion season tagged by the media as "Glamour is Back." Fitting because that 90s culture so transparently depicted in Squad provides the glam juice for much of Fall 2000.

Once again, its important to exhibit privilege, that you have the means to wear the finest fabrics, styles, and creations, even those rehashed. From the rose leather jacket that Claire Daines dones in the first bar scene of Squad, to the print shirts and brown suede coat that Omar Epps wears in crime action sequences, Fall 2000 brings back the ready-to-lux look, and it's truly gorgeous. Byblos (Genny house) presents a series of dark blue peices that range from crepe wool pants and skirts to lambskin pants and thigh-length rain coats. The Byblos collection includes accent peices for a softer tone, like silk patterned knee-length dresses, with the prevailing theme being midtown chic. These are work clothes with attitude, consistent with the mod trend of Fall 2000 and versatile enough to wear seriously.

If you like the low-waist mod look, John Richmond presents elmwood velvet pants, and beige high-water stretch bottoms that can be coupled with all of the Fall 2000 colors. They look great with bandeaus and halter sweaters, and, for something a little more splashy, Richmond shows purple overcoats. (Image left is Luca Luca Fall 2000 leather black pants and camisole.)

You can see the roots of city mod trends in the Chanel collection - denim stretch, low-cut pants and halters overlayed with sheer. Chanel upgrades the mod thread for Year 2000 with decorative oversized scarves and blouses, and trims the rebel look with white wool cropped jackets and corduroy arm coats. However you mix and match the mod peices, Fall 2000 has lots to offer to ladies with attitude.
