Spring 2001 - Mediterranean Dance |
| |
|
Dance
is everywhere in Spring 2001 - black salsa dresses, tulle ball gowns, and
mediterranean chains of bracelets; the figures are moving, on the verge
of spinning and stopping and stepping. It is a stage of motion, where the
colors flow from piece to piece and the cut becomes the dominant character.
The Dance Theme is due in part, no doubt, to the recent rise of Latin celebrities
like Jennifer Lopez, Penelope Cruz, and Giselle. Latin influences on the
runways are starting to make an impact on the trade, and Spring 2001 Dance
designs reflect this classic Theme.
Christian Lacroix presents a dreamy Spring 2001 Collection of asymmetric
silk and satin dresses with punk flair and jazz accents. Whether it be draping,
ruching, shredding, or layering, Lacroix is a master of artistic ensembles
and Lacroix Spring 2001 exhibits this tendency. On the one hand we see a
pheasant-like silk cape in sea greens with rose and ruby patterns and florals,
coupled with a toy lilac and orange swordsman's belt.
On the other we slashing American Indian motifs belted and strapped with
yellow punk leather. Most significantly, Lacroix Spring 2001 uses shoulder
decorations and neckwear to "button-up" the New Millennium Woman
and keep her from floating away on a spirit of conquest. She can move, but
she cannot escape her nature. more... |

Ferragamo Spring 2001 presents another interpretation of the Dance Theme,
with tidy halters and lux skirts set in a gold, tinkling framework of studded
bangle rings. Directly inspired by the Royal Roman themes of Fall 2000,
this collection gives us a first glimpse at how luxury will be projected
in the future, with an emphasis on fabric swaths.
Ferragamo steps boldly into Helmut Lang's design space with this modern
implementation of party leather, leveraging the house's preeminence in elegant
daywear.
Other
notable Spring 2001 Collections in the heated Dance Theme are Hugo Boss,
with sequined halters and dark, matching skirts and pants, Emmanuel Ungaro
with ivory crepe dresses, and Bottega Veneta with platinum leather shells
and black travel gloves.
On the balletic front, Givenchy Spring 2001 presents a series of ruched
a-line dresses in colors ranging from cream and red-on-white to gray-on-blue.
Donna Karan shows a line-up of wearable silk chiffon and silk organza dresses
in prints and ruffles, and Oscar de la Renta presents a smart set of cha-cha,
taffeta pouf, and corseted styles. Ah yes, and plume skirts allover. |
