China Olympic Diver Guo Jingjing Set to Become International Star

©August 2008 Metrofashion.com- Amidst the Olympic furor over swimmer Michael Phelps, another water sports athlete at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics is set to become an international celebrity; diving diva Guo Jingjing is one of the most famous athletes in China and her Olympic Gold Medal in Women's 3m Spingboard Diving may lift, twist, and flip her right into superstar status.

"Guo" as she is charmingly known among the media is as much fun to watch climbing out of the pool as she is sliding into it perfectly. Guo Jingjing is a master at the "tiny splash" exclamation point in world class diving competition, with one of the tightest body positions seen in diving. Like Phelps, she appears to be one single muscle of movement in competition, much like a beautiful evening gown is constructed from one single garment.

After a dive, she glides effortlessly out of the pool and takes a respectful bow to the sport. Her bow is anticipated almost as much in the Olympics as other athletes' performances. With porcelain features (she is a successful cosmetics model) and a soft but tough auro, Guo has been instrumental in putting a charming face on the oft-perceived rigid character of Chinese athletics.

Yet Guo is controversial as well; she often speaks frankly to the media, as she did in reportedly calling a rival diver "fatty". And she likes the spotlight, pursueing commercial endorsement projects through the sponsorship of the China government and even recently signing on for a television series. So the question may not be whether Guo Jingjing will break out of athletics to other celebrity roles, but when. Sports and entertainment fans can look forward to that dive.
